Why it exists

Most vectorisers were written for logos. They hand you open paths, stray specks and floating islands, and none of that survives contact with a router bit. A traced pattern that looks fine on screen becomes a pile of loose pieces on the spoilboard.

Magic Carve was written the other way round — from the cut backwards. Every contour it produces is closed. Every floating loop gets bridged. Every export names its layers the way a CAM package expects to find them. The preview shows the real toolpath, rapids and all, because a plunge in the wrong place costs a bit and an afternoon.

It grew out of work on Arabic geometric screens and mashrabiya panels, where a single design can carry a few thousand interlocking pieces. If the tool can hold that together, it can hold together a cabinet door.

How it works

Artwork is decoded server-side, reduced to a single channel, and thresholded with the method you pick — Otsu for a clean scan, adaptive Gaussian when the lighting is uneven, or a manual cutoff when you want the last word. Contours are traced with a Moore-neighbourhood walk, simplified with Douglas–Peucker, and classified into outer cuts, inner cuts and engraving by nesting depth. Toolpaths are offset by half your bit diameter, stepped down in passes, and written out as plain, readable G-code.
